The all-new budget Y1 series sports a 5.5-inches IPS LCD display, Snapdragon 835 (Y1) and Snapdragon 825 (Y1 Lite) processors. On the software part, the devices come with latest MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat. As a general rule of thumb, rooting requires you to first install a custom recovery on the device.   4. Download TWRP recovery image for your device:
  5. Copy the downloaded image to C:\adb folder where the ADB drivers are installed.
  6. Hold the SHIFT key on the keyboard and right-click on an empty space inside the same folder.
  7. Select ‘Open command window here‘ or ‘Open PowerShell window here
  8. Now enter the following command to install TWRP on Redmi Y1/Note 5A Prime.
  9. fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-0-ugg.img
  10. For Redmi Y1 Lite/Note 5A, use:
  11. fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-0-ugglite.img
  12. Once the recovery has been flashed you can reboot your phone using:
  13. fastboot reboot

How to Root Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite using SuperSU

Thes simplest way to root your device is by using SuperSU by Chainfire.

  1. Download latest SuperSU zip.
  2. Connect your device to the PC and transfer the downloaded file to the phone’s storage.
  3. Disconnect the device and power it down.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Up + Power button until the Mi Logo appears.
  5. Release the keys to boot into TWRP recovery.
  6. When prompted with ‘Unmodified system partition‘ warning, swipe the button on the screen.
  7. Tap on the ‘Install‘ button.
  8. Navigate to the location where the file was transferred and select the SuperSU root zip file
  9. Finally, swipe the button on the screen to root Redmi Y1/Y1 Lite.
  10. Once flashed, press the ‘Reboot System‘ button.
